Free to Stitch - Free to Bitch

In May, 2005, lawyers representing Sew Fast Sew Easy Inc., a New York based sewing shop, began sending out notices to Cafepress and Yahoo, the websites that host the online shops and mailing lists of various social knitting organizations around the country. These cease and desist orders told these crafters that this company owned the service mark "Stitch & Bitch Cafe," and that these knitters (who do not operate for profit) could not use certain words.

We disagree. We believe we are not infringing on any trademarks. We're not even making any money off the phrase. But, being just a group of crafters scattered all over the US, it's hard to band together and fight this hostile legal action.

Here's the first step. Help us out. Help us raise some money to hire a lawyer to make sure that the word "Stitch" and the word "Bitch" are free to be used by all, in any way they wish, without harassment. 20% of the cost of each item goes right into the Good Lawyer Jar. (Everything else goes to CafePress for production costs!)

If we manage to get up enough bad publicity so they drop the whole thing? Money will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Visit them at www.nationalbreastcancer.org .

And before they try to shut this store down, too? We are NOT affiliated with Sew Fast Sew Easy. We aren't even using the word "and" in our stuff. Please visit our website for all the latest information!
