Besides eating, drinking and eating some more, Purim signifies the miracle of Jewish survival. "Purim" is derived from the word "pur", meaning "lots." In the book of Esther it is written that 2000 years ago, Haman was decreed to destroy the Jews. He cast "lots" to decide when he would implement his evil plan. The lot fell on the 13th day of the Hebrew month "Adar." But, because of our fasting and repentance, Jews were saved from genocide. Besides making you hungry, the homentash displayed is meant to symbolize “Haman’s purse or hat”. The Homentash is fashioned as a star or David, representing the shape of King David's shield and victory. The message is that we must never forget the evils of those who have sought to destroy Jewish heritage, yet we must also savor the sweetness of freedom.
