Venice's Bridge of Sighs, or Ponte dei Sospiri, passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the the old prisons to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. Lord Byron named the bridge in the 19th century, with the suggestion that prisoners being escorted to their cells might sigh at their last glimpse of Venice.
