The Marianas Trench is the world's deepest canyon at 36,000 feet. On January 6, 2009, President George W. Bush set aside the trench along with the waters surrounding the islands of Uracas, Maug, and Asuncion as a monument. The total area of this marine protected area is 95,222 square miles, making it one of the largest of its kind in the world.
