halcyon days (ca. 30 CE for Christians, ca. 600 CE for Muslims), everyone who followed their leader was as certain their dogma was the Only Truth as the fundamentalists are today.
They worship their holy traditions (the Church, Tradition, or hadiths) and/or their sect's interpretation of their holy book (Bible, Qur'an, Dianetics) as if it were as perfect and inerrant as God is. They ignore any parts of their tradition and holy book that do not conform to Their Version, and if anyone outside their sect dares to point out their selectivity, they attack the outsider with all the viciousness that their religion of "peace" supposedly refuses.
Fundamentalists pretend to themselves and others that Their Version has all the answers to all the questions humanity can ever come up with, an infallible oracle that becomes more infallible the more closely their holy book conforms to Their Version of it. They pretend that Their Version was written out of a language, cultural context, zeitgeist, and values system identical to their own. No matter how ancient their holy book is (around 1,100 years old for the Qur'an, 2,000 to 3,000 years old for the Bible), Their Version was written specifically for the people of today's world. To attempt to discover what the original authors of their holy book meant their original audience to understand is intolerable heresy. (And no, God did NOT write the Bible. And Muhammad did NOT write the Qur'an himself; nor did Allah write it and Muhammad channel it; nor is it perfect (suras 18:1, 39:1-2); nor does a perfect copy of the Qur'an sit in Heaven on a perfect table (sura 85:21-22). Heaven is not a physical place. Allah is not indistinguishable from God.)
Fundamentalists
are certain beyond the shadow of a doubt that only they and those who agree with them on every point will go to Heaven. Everyone else in the entire Universe is predestined to go to Hell — even people who share their religion, but not Their Version of their religion.
I call Christian fundamentalists "Christian Pharisees" because they are far more similar to Pharisees than they are to followers of Jesus of Nazareth. Like Pharisees, they are certain that only by following all their rules with obsessional perfection will they attain eternal bliss. Like Pharisees, they feel free to sit in judgment upon others and condemn them if they do not measure up to the Pharisees' standards. Like Pharisees, they are holier than thou, or anyone else. Like Pharisees, they see nothing wrong with theocracy, so long as they are the theocrats....
Despite what they believe to the contrary, fundamentalists do NOT have an exclusive lock on religion. It is perfectly possible to use the brain God gave you AND have religious ideas that diverge from those of the fundamentalists. There is no Devil. There are no djinni. There is no Hell. We are commanded to love the rest of God's creation as much as we love ourselves — not to blow up anyone who disagrees with us. Use the designs in this section to flaunt your belief that God loves ALL of God's creation — not just the fundamentalists who are best at obeying all the fundamentalists' rules....
