Land Of Enchantment Notebook
This painting depicts a Home in Gallup, New Mexico. The original Art is a miniature, credit card size, acrylic painting. The artist is a Hawaii Plastic Surgeon, born in Peru and currently living in Honolulu. New Mexico is characterized by its wonderful people, history and its culture. The hot air balloons, so typical of New Mexico skies are beautiful. The artist has painted the Logos of New Mexico and The City of Gallup on two balloons. At 6,510 feet above sea level, Gallup has blue skies, clean air, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The summers are hot during the day, but the high altitude and low humidity means that nights remain distinctly cool.
The City is bisected by historic U.S. Highway Route 66. The town is mentioned in the lyrics of the song of the same name ("You'll see Amarillo and Gallup, NM"). Founded in 1881, as a headquarters along the construction right of way for the southern transcontinental rail route, the town draws its name from David L. Gallup, a paymaster for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad (later part of the Santa Fe Railroad). The town has a long association with the mining and railroad industries, although tourism has been most significant to the local economy in recent times. Due to its proximity to Monument Valley and other favorite Western settings for Hollywood’s movie kings, Gallup’s El Rancho Hotel has played host to many legendary film stars such as John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Kirk Douglas, Doris Day, Gregory Peck and Burt Lancaster. Numerous films were made in Gallup from 1930 -1980s, including Billy the Kid (1930) and Superman (1980). Also known as the Indian Capital of the World, modern Gallup features a diverse culture with a significant portion (43%) of the local population being Native American. The predominant local tribes are Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni. Gallup is home to many of the finest tribal artists in the U.S., practicing their talents in jewelry, weaving, pottery, painting, sculpture, and other artistic endeavors. Gallup is known as the “Heart of Indian Country” because it is on the edge of the Navajo reservation and is home to members of many other tribes as well. Gallup is also the largest Indian center in the Southwest and the ceremonial capital of Native America. There are many American peoples in the Gallup/Four Corners region. By far the most numerous are the Navajo, who are today widely regarded for their achievements in wool, with original Navajo rugs and blankets (both new and antique) sought by private collectors and museums throughout the world. Gallup is undisputed Southwestern center for original Native American art.
