Before the American Revolutionary War, the British referred to American colonists of Dutch heritage as "Yankees." There is some speculation that "Yankees" stems from the diminutive of common Dutch first and last names - "Jan" and "Kees." During the American Revolutionary War, the British used it derisively against all Americans.

During the American Civil War, southerners called any northerner – particularly soldiers – "Yankees."

During World War I and World War II, American soldiers were referred to as "Yankees" or "Yanks." Now the world calls all Americans "Yankees."

Americans in the South feel that Yankees are Northerners.

Northerners feel that Yankees are Easterners.

Easterners feel that Yankees are only in or from New England.

In New England, it is thought that Yankees are only in or from Vermont.

In Vermont, Yankees are just people who eat pie at breakfast.
