Rehabilitation of indigenous wildlife is a passion only dreamed of until retirement.
Now every waking minute is dedicated to fostering of most mammals found in Upstate New York.
With many acres of refuge set aside for release as well as the large woodland farmstead here, those who are ready for release have the opportunity to thrive in a very diverse, yet wildlife friendly habitat.
Raccoons and Skunks are the two specie I generally prefer to rehabilitate, but there will always be a soft spot for all those squirrels, fox kits and possies and all the other gentle furfolk in crisis.
Mostly organic foods are offered as well as unsurpassed milk replacers in order to "produce" the very best in releasable wildlife. My feeling is "if one is going to endeavor to provide for these animals one must commit to offering only the best". Outdoor enclosures are designed to afford them habituation to their soon-to-be wild habitat, yet connected, inside housing allows them safety from the elements and security from stressors.
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation does not assist us in our endeavor to aid animals in crisis. All medical expense, bedding costs, building material purchases and food and milk replacer expenses are strictly our of our pockets. All proceeds are turned around 100% back towards the care of the wildlife admissions or to assist other regional rehabilitators.
If you are familiar with a local wildlife rehabilitator in your area, please consider donating discarded towel, flannel items, lumber or other building supplies. If you are interested in becoming a rehabber contact your State Wildlife Agency (DEC, DNR) or connect with the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association
