Richard was born in Vancouver, British Columbia to a Finnish Mother and a First Nations Father. Having been raised by a Russian, Jewish, Dutch, German, Mennonite couple in Abbotsford, BC he had many cultures and experiences to draw from. Yet, it is both the Finnish and Native biological roots that have taken hold when it comes to defining his artistic style. Richard’s first love has always been architecture. He is acutely aware of the spaces and environments that surround him. “It is the stark simple lines and gentle ergonomic curves that bring me the greatest sense of tranquility” he comments, “When it comes to colour it has to be vibrant. Vibrant colour against a stark monochromatic background excites me the most.”

Richard, for the most part, is self-taught. He graduated from Applied Multimedia in 1998, which gave him a good technical base to work from. He was hired immediately out of school and has been working as a graphic designer/web developer ever since. It is the artistic aspect of the industry that he enjoys the most rather than the technical part of it. “I was born to design and to create,” he says with delight.
