it's turtles all the way down

Stephen Hawking, in "A Brief History of Time", told a great story about, well, really, everything. It went something like this:

A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: “What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.” The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, “What is the tortoise standing on.” “You’re very clever, young man, very clever,” said the old lady. “But it’s turtles all the way down!”

Not only is it good in a book, but think of it on your chest, back, mug, cards, whatever. But you don't want the Whole story there, just enough to either identify yourself or to pique someone's curiosity. Hence just, "it's turtles all the way down."

Then you can either get down to it right away, or (if necessary) you can tell the whole thing yourself and try to explain. Click the logo for much more info at Wikipedia.

Either way, it's a great "conversation starter" with those of either a discerning or a curious turn of mind. The flip side is that it will screen out those who are too dull to get it or even be curious and those who are too jaded to engage.

Perfect!
