One of the five pillars of Islam, zakah literally means "purify".
There are many mentions of the zakat in the Holy Qur'an, some of which include:
"And withal, they were not enjoined aught but that they should worship God, sincere in their faith in Him alone, turning away from all that is false; and that they should be constant in prayer; and that they should spend in charity: for this is a moral law endowed with ever-true soundness and clarity. al-Qur'an 98:5 (trans M Asad)
And let not those who covetously withhold of the gifts which Allah Hath given them of His Grace, think that it is good for them: Nay, it will be the worse for them: soon shall the things which they covetously withheld be tied to their necks Like a twisted collar, on the Day of Judgment. To Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do. al-Qur'an 3:180 (trans Yusuf Ali)
One of the many benefits of zakah is that it is a way to redistribute wealth from the better off to those who are less fortunate. For this reason those that are eligible to receive zakah are precisely stipulated unlike the case of general sadaqah. Muslims who have the minimum amount stipulated (nisab) pay 2.5% every Hijri year.
