The Texas Rangers have covered up this event until now.

Synopsis

West Texas 1879 The last raid incident caused for the first time a Texas Ranger to be fired for cowardice; several of his men resigned just before being dismissed for the same reason. The cover-up of the raid and the odd death of Private Anglin continues today. This book documents the buried conflict between Rangers and the U.S. Cavalry, especially in regard to their attitudes toward the Comanche Indians. Racism was at the core of the Texas Rangers' view of both Indian and federal soldier: U.S. Cavalrymen were all black, commanded by white officers."PHILLIPS PICKS UP ON little known topics, then does a great job illuminating us with terse, straightforward prose. In this book, he takes us through all of the evidence regarding what is supposed to have been the last Commanche raid in Texas, and the last slaying of a Texas Ranger (W.B. Anglin) by the Indians: at least that's what's purported to have occured! Was it a real Commanche raid at all? Was Ranger W.B. Anglin really killed by Indians? Was this whole case one of racist attitudes toward Indians and Black cavalrymen by the Texas Rangers? Why was a Ranger, for the first time ever, fired for cowardice? Was it all covered up with lies at official inquiries and in the press? Phillips aims to get to the bottom of this mystery and tells the story largely through the parties' own words. Comparing all accounts of the "raid" side-by-side for the first time it's easy to see that there were many inconsistencies in events reported depending upon whom was asked . What Phillips digs up illuminates the seldom-written about friction and resentment that existed between the US Cavalry and the Texas Rangers. Illustrated with pictures of places and documents mentioned in the tale, this is a cool little book you will enjoy reading."
