The Gurkha Soldier

For over a 150 years, the Gurkha has provided his services to numerous countries, initially as a mercenary soldier and later as a fully fledged member of the Armed Forces of the country he serves.   Today the Gurkha serves in the Armed Forces of Nepal (their homeland), Great Britain, India and numerous sultanates including Brunei and Oman.   The Gurkha also serves in the police force of Singapore as a special unit of police.

This shop is a special tribute to the Gurkha Soldier that hails from Nepal.

The following comment is attributed to Sir Ralph Turner who was, at the time he made the comment, a serving British Army officer attached to the 3rd Gurkha Rifles...

"Bravest of the brave,
most generous of the generous,
never had country more faithful friends than you".

This quote is carved into the monument to the Gurkha Soldier in London which was unveiled by the Queen in 1997.

Gurkha soldiers are known throughout the world as exceptional soldiers originating out of the Kingdom of Nepal with an excellent record of service spanning over 150 years of service to Great Britain and India but also to a number of other countries in which the Gurkha is a regular soldier.   Not well known is the fact that a contingent of Gurkhas are an essential formation of the Singapore Police and perform duties as police officers.

The following, an extract from 'Bugles and Tigers' by John Masters, of the 4th Battalion, The Prince of Wales' Own Gurkha Rifles, epitomises the character of the Gurkha soldier:

"A British battleship, lights out, a bristle with fourteen-inch guns, moved slowly up the heavily defended Suez Canal early in 1915.  The officer on watch heard a small voice to be saying, "Halt! Who-go-dah?" The officer did not reply.   The voice then said, 'Halt-or-I-fire!' the battleship switched on a search light, which illuminated one Gurkha Rifleman standing on the bank.   His rifle was pointed at the side of the battleship.   The battleship stopped; its Captain sent an urgent message for help; and the strategic movements of the Royal Navy stood still while an Officer of Gurkhas was found to tell the sentry that the battleship could pass.   At last the Gurkha shouted, "Pass-friend-all's-well," and lowered his rifle.   The battleship glided on, with a thousand British sailors cheering and laughing".

We commemorate the Gurkha soldier with a representation of crossed Kukri's, the favourite and most trusted weapon of the Gurkha soldier. This representation is universal and does not represent any particular country other than Nepal, the homeland of the Gurkha soldier.

The motto of the Gurkha soldier is:

"Khathar hunnu bhanda marhu ramro" - "It is better to die than live a coward".
