MANHATTAN BRIDGE - NEW YORK CITY - this Dutch-blue colored design is for all Manhattan and New York City fans or people who like beautiful suspension bridges - built in 1909 as the third of the Downtown Bridges, Manhattan Bridge connects Manhattan and Brooklyn with an overall-length of 6850 feet. It is often used as an alternate to the Brooklyn Bridge, since the two are so close in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Construction began on October 1, 1901, and the bridge was open to traffic on December 31, 1909. The Manhattan Bridge was first planned as a traditional wire-cable suspension bridge to be used exclusively by trains. In 1892, elevated railway magnate Frederick Uhlmann had proposed this span just north of the present site of the Manhattan Bridge. In 1901, Gustav Lindenthal, the commissioner of the newly created New York City Department of Bridges, presented plans for the Manhattan Bridge (originally called "Suspension Bridge Number 3"), which was to connect the Bowery and Canal Street in Chinatown with Flatbush Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn - this design really looks great on all customized gift items !
