Shimmy 2B Free! (formerly Shimmy for the Cure! Colorado) started as an idea between three individuals. Starting as "Dance for the Cure" with a program of varied dance genres and classes, the name was changed to SFCC the second year (aka: SFCCo), and moved to a focus of belly dancing.
Nationally acclaimed dance instructors are contracted to come in to teach workshops for two days, with a high-quality, family-friendly evening dance concert to follow.
2007 saw the inclusion of the first Shimmy Hafla, and 2008 continued with this practice! A Hafla (pronounced "hef'la" - and not to be confused with "hel'fa" which is a sponge : ) is a celebration or party, where everyone sits and eats, music is played and when someone is ready, they get up to dance. If there are scheduled dancers (and there are :) once that portion of the evening is over, it becomes an open dance event with music going until the wee hours of the morning.
2008 also included the first Shimmy Henna Party, expanding a once 1.5 day event to 3.5 days, offering something for everyone!
2006 saw the start of BOO Fest (currently undergoing some modifications and renaming), which is a smaller, more relaxed event than SFCCo and is a 'pre-fundraiser' to help cover initial operating costs for advertising and deposits for instructors and venues. BOO Fest hosts a local instructor with one day of class, followed by an evening dance concert as well. BOO Fest offers dancers a place to experiement with new music, a new routine, style or presentation.
2010 saw the name change to Shimmy 2B Free! and expansion to include a new sister event starting up in California. And for three years, have had a working relationship with Breast Cancer Network of Strength - which has a focus on the local communities they serve.
The long-term goal for S2BF remains the same; to become a stand-alone nonprofit, able to offer direct assistance to those in need of assistance with medical and/or living expenses while they struggle to make their way through the wake of this debilitating disease, as well as to offer a safe house for women that have found the courage to leave an abusive relationship. This initial offering of items bearing the S2BF logo is a step in that direction.
