Description: Chapter 5 of the SGAA Reference & Technical Manual, Second Edition
Synopsis:
This second printing begins with the fifth chapter of the manual because structureand reinforcement are vital to the success and life of a stained glass window. Yet, these important topics are too often neglected by the new practitioner. Thegreat majority of those who view a stained glass window will see nothing but the art of the window; however, for a practitioner to be successful, he must thoroughly understand the craft of the window. The root of the stained glass craft is found ina windows structure and reinforcement. Over the coming months, additional chapters will be made available again. Not allof the book will be reprinted; some of the chapters are too out-of-date and describe processes no longer considered safe or for which the materials describedare no longer available. However, the majority of the SGAA Reference & Technical Manual, Second Edition will once again be made available to the stained glass practitioner. Watch www.stainedglass.org, the Kaleidoscope and, of course, The Stained Glass Quarterly for updates as this project progresses and more chapters becomeavailable. In the original printing of this edition, the entire manual was published as oneleather-bound volume. In this second printing, the book will be broken up andreprinted chapter-by-chapter over a period of several years. Each chapter will appearin the reprint exactly as it did in the original printing of the second edition. As there have been no copies of the last printing available for some time now, the Stained Glass Association of America hopes this reprinting will help to fill a void in available technical information regarding stained glass. Be aware that this reprinting is not an updated edition and that for the latest information on safety in the studio or the current standards for stained glass restoration, the reader is encouraged the obtain Recommendations for Studio Safety and The Standards and Guidelines for the Preservation of Historic Stained Glass, both of which are available from the SGAA Headquarters by calling 800.438-9581 or visiting www.stainedglass.org.
