Black Rhino in green
Poached almost to extinction, Black Rhinos are slowly recovering from a 96% decline in population, and are now up to about 3,725 surviving today. As recently as 1970, there were approximately 65,000 Black Rhinos in Africa. Unfortunately, in 2006, the subspecies West African Black Rhino was declared extinct, due to poaching. Conservation efforts and successful breeding programs are slowly helping this magnificent creature increase its numbers.
