The ankh symbol combines the male element (the cross) and the feminine element (the oval). These two symbols, the cross and oval, were said to be the two generative principles of heaven and earth.
In many Egyptian paintings, you can find figures carrying the ankh by the open end. This indicates that it is a KEY which was an important part of early Egyptian spirituality.
