Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear, Vincent Van Gogh, (1853 - 1890)Vincent Van Gogh Brief Biography
Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890) is generally considered the greatest Dutch painter and draughtsman after Rembrandt. With Cézanne and Gauguin, Van Gogh is recognised as one of the great Post-Impressionist artists. He powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. His work, all of it produced during a period of only 10 years, hauntingly conveys through its striking colour, coarse brushwork, and contoured forms the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide. He sold one painting in his lifetime. Dutch Painter and Draughtsman Vincent Van Gogh

About the painting, ' Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear'
Van Gogh moved from Paris (where he lived with his brother, Theo) to Arles in February 1888. Here he painted more than 200 canvases in 15 months. During this time he sold no pictures, was in poverty, and suffered recurrent nervous crisis with hallucinations and depression. Van Gogh was soon dreaming of founding an artist's colony in Arles. At its head he wanted to see Paul Gauguin, for whom he had developed an intense, boyish hero-worship; and he pressed Theo to persuade Gauguin to join him at Arles. Gauguin came in October 1888, encouraged by a financial arrangement he had made with Theo. For a few weeks the two artists got along well; then they began to quarrel. Soon afterwards, in December 1888, Van Gogh attacked Gauguin and later the same evening cut off a piece of his own ear, an event commemorated in his Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. The exact cause of this famous disaster has been impossible to identify. Incidentally, Van Gogh was full of remorse for his behaviour, and resumed friendly relations with Gauguin. (The Impressionists, Nathaniel Harris, Marks and Spencer, 1984)

Karene contemplating all the work she has done on the Philosophy Shop!ABOUT YOUR SHOP KEEPER: KARENE HOWIE
My partner (philosopher Geoff Haselhurst) and I are building a large philosophy website which is the source (and inspiration) for most of the Philosophy images and quotes in this shop.
Below are some of our favourite philosophers / quotes and links to relevant pages of our website. Philosophy (which is ultimately about Wisdom from Truth and Reality) is important to our world (all proceeds from this shop are used to promote our work on Philosophy).
Thus we also hope that you find our philosophy website interesting!
Cheers, Karene. (December, 2009)

The Most Simple Science Theory of Physical Reality.
Philosophy Physics Metaphysics of Space & the Wave Structure of Matter (WSM).
'Most of the fundamental ideas of science are simple and can be expressed in a language comprehensible to everyone. ... Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.' (Albert Einstein) 'Metaphysics is universal and is exclusively concerned with primary substance. ... And here we will have the science to study that which is, both in its essence and in the properties which it has.' (Aristotle, 340BC) 'When forced to summarize the general theory of relativity in one sentence: Time and space and gravitation have no separate existence from matter.' (Albert Einstein) 'What we observe as material bodies and forces are nothing but shapes and variations in the structure of space. Particles are just schaumkommen (appearances).' (Erwin Schrodinger on Quantum Physics / Wave Mechanics) 'Can we visualize a universe which is finite yet unbounded? ... The supreme task of the physicist is to arrive at those universal laws from which the cosmos can be built up by pure deduction.' (Albert Einstein) 'There is nothing more necessary than truth. ... One does not want to be deceived, under the supposition that it is injurious, dangerous, or fatal to be deceived.' (Friedrich Nietzsche on Philosophy) 'Although I am fully convinced of the truth of Evolution, I by no means expect to convince experienced naturalists. But I look with confidence to the future naturalists, who will be able to view both sides with impartiality.' (Charles Darwin) 'If religion is the establishing of a relationship between man and the universe, then morality is the explanation of those activities that automatically result when a person maintains a relationship to the universe.' (Leo Tolstoy) 'Analyse any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which life owes its perpetuation.' (Sigmund Freud) Evolving a healthy lifestyle. Preventative medicine of physical exercise and consuming clean air, water and nature based organic food.
