|Claude Monet Brief Biography|
Claude Monet (b. Nov. 14, 1840, Paris, Fr.--d. Dec. 5, 1926, Giverny) was a French painter, initiator, leader, and unswerving advocate of the Impressionist style. He is regarded as the archetypal Impressionist in that his devotion to the ideals of the movement was unwavering throughout his long career, and it is fitting that one of his pictures--Impression: Sunrise (Musée Marmottan, Paris; 1872)--gave the group his name. Monet Biography, French Impressionist Painter
About the painting, 'Impression, Sunrise' (1872)
Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant) is a painting by Claude Monet, for which the Impressionist movement was named.
Dated 1872, but probably created in 1873, its subject is the harbour of Le Havre, using very loose brush strokes that suggest rather than delineate it. Monet explained the title later: "I was asked to give a title for the catalogue; I couldn't very well call it a view of Le Havre. So I said: 'Put Impression.'"
