BSL stands for Breed Specific Legislation; although Pit Bull Breeds are the front-runner of breed bans they are not the only targets. As of date there are over 75 different breeds that are effected by some form of BSL across the United States.
What happens to your four legged companion if BSL is to pass in your area, well it depends on the guidelines of the ban, in most cases unless you are able to move you will be forced to turn your loyal friend over to the local animal control where it will be destroyed and disposed of.
Denver was the first to impose a level of BSL where local officials went door to door removing anything and everything that was Pit Bull in appearance, and they are certainly not going to be the last.
[Tuesday, May 20, 2008] Ohio House Bill 568, introduced by Representative Tyrone Yates of Cincinnati, seeks to prohibit the ownership, keeping, or harboring of a dog that "belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog." Furthermore, if this bill is passed and adopted into law, all such dogs will be seized and euthanized. It is imperative that all concerned dog owners in Ohio contact their elected representatives and express their vehement opposition to this draconian legislation.
Typically a Breed Ban seems to be proposed shortly after an incident involving what some consider a dangerous breed, meaning if a neighborhood stray happens to bite someone a ban could be proposed to ban all dogs of that particular breed, however that is not always the case. Breed Bans still continue to be introduced without incident, and they are done so rather quietly, unless you keep yourself informed and up to date chances are you will not even know a ban is going to effect your breed in your area until it is too late.
Get involved and become active in bringing awareness while remaining a responsible dog owner regardless of your breed of choice. Support groups such as the Endangered Breed Association who are dedicated to preserving the rights of all dog owners.
Do a search for online communities, find one that will suit your needs and that you feel you will be comfortable with and join it and stay informed, and if you are able to offer support then offer your support it may be your breed next. Most importantly be responsible, and live above the ignorance.
