Colin Slater has organised a science fiction convention which is taking place in a school hall in the beautiful London suburb of Greenford. Hastily, and consequently badly, organised by the sort of people for whom the phrase 'motley crew' was invented, it features the dreariest guests and tackiest exhibits.
However it has attracted quite a crowd due to the advertised appearance of Rupert Houghton, the eponymous star of Moonquake, the early 60s hit sci-fi TV series, episodes of which no longer exist on video-tape. Houghton has been unheard of since the programme's last transmission in 1964.
One visitor to the convention is Mike Graeber, an American journalist who was born in London and has childhood memories of Moonquake. His girlfriend, Marla, has accompanied him (and unwittingly financed the trip with her already groaning overdraft) despite her loathing of England and the fact that their relationship is approaching Bobbitt Event Horizon.
A variety of bizarre fans show up, but the convention is threatened when it is discovered that Houghton has not actually been located and may not even be alive.
Or is he?
Can Houghton be found and persuaded to attend the convention ? And will it be in time to save Colin from Death by a Thousand Anoraks?
