With a current population of 380, it was founded in 1908 as the state's first planned resort community. The town, with it's predominant architectural feature being that of granite cobblestone structures, is nestled in a mountain valley surrounded by rugged hillsides and nature at it's best. It is the gateway to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge which contains more than 59,000 acres of pristine beauty. The Wichitas are the oldest mountain range in North America and the refuge is the second most visited in the National Wildlife Refuge system hosting more than 2 million annual visitors.
