More Information
Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the healthy social, cultural, and academic development of at-risk, inner-city youth through education in the arts. MECA's mariachi program began in 1991 as a small ensemble with three songs in its repertoire and now, 14 years later (2005), the program serves over 175 youth annually at inner-city schools and at MECA's home at the former Justin E. Dow Elementary. Mariach MECA is a performing group made up of the advanced mariachi students in MECA's After-School Program. Mariachi MECA has performed internationally, played for two U.S. presidents, and received awards at national competitions. The students have learned, through their music, how the arts can define a culture and unite a community. They have found many aspects to celebrate within their heritage and within themselves, and have used this knowledge to prepare for a bright future.
