Description: Underground Legacy is the fascinating story of cave exploration and the Restoration Field Camp at Mammoth Cave
Synopsis:

At this very moment there are people underground in west-central Kentucky.
Some are there to tour the cave. Some are there to explore. Others are there to participate in America's premier cave restoration project, the Restoration Field Camp at Mammoth Cave.
For the past decade and beyond, thousands of cavers from across the country have gathered at Mammoth Cave National Park to repair the damage caused by more than a century of tourism.
Underground Legacy is not just an account of cave restoration, it is a personal journey of exploration and discovery. Follow the author through muddy crawlways and up dangerous climbs, learning along the way that cave exploration can injure, and sometimes kill.
In the end, he speaks for a generation of volunteers reporting that Mammoth Cave is a better place because they visited here.
It is their legacy!
What Readers are Saying
Underground Legacy is a vivid communication of the feeling of kinship with Mammoth Cave and its timeless wonder.
It's a great book, and should take its place as required reading for all cavers. Underground Legacy is the next chapter in the human history of Mammoth Cave. This is a special cave that has affected many people deeply, unique in all the world. Norm Rogers brings that to life.
I switched back and forth between Underground Legacy and the new Harry Potter book. I was really short on sleep for a couple of days!
I received the book on Friday and couldn't put it down. Read it from cover to cover by noon on Saturday. The book is great and made me chuckle. I can relate to Norm's comments about leaving the cave and restoration camp. Thanks, Norm, for taking the time to record the memories.
The book really brought out the spirit of the volunteer. A must-read for all who donate their time to fulfill a passion, cavers and non-cavers alike.
Norm Rogers is a born storyteller. I became so involved in the book I couldn't stop reading. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever fallen under the spell of a cave or any other special place.
We need more people like the Mammoth Cave Restoration Volunteers who left their heart, soul, and sweat for a cleaner cave for future generations; all the volunteers took were memories.
I could feel your sadness at leaving that cave. When I'm there, I have no financial woes. I have no problems with bosses at work. There is only the cave, the history, and my companions. Working side by side. Sweating, swearing, singing, joking. I am an explorer. I am part of history. Part of this magnificent cave. The final chapter of this book is really marvelous. That's not a word I use very often.
