Maggie Ross Dog Art : About the Artist
I suppose, with art classes in grade school being my "art training" you could say I am primarily self-taught. I had always had a flair for artistic creation, and painted many different subjects growing up, including copying some of the Masters, like Klimt.
I made most of my own clothes, too. And polymer clay jewelry. . .don't get me started! The majority of my time, however, was spent raising my family and living my life.2002 found me retired to Florida, family raised, pets now gone, and deciding to decorate my new homewith some images of my West Highland White Terrier, Maggie and my Scottish Terrier, Ross. So, at the age of 60, I began to paint dogs. My Airedale, Ginger. . .Maggie & Ross. . .
Maggie & Ross were always together. They ran pell mell through the yard in pursuit of squirrels and chipmonks. They even cornered a fierce Woodchuck once, but it (thankfully) managed to slip throughthe fence and went back about its business. My Westie & Scottie are the inspiration not only for many paintings; they are together again in memory as the name of my shop.My pets in retirement are two little Pekingese dogs.
Tiny little fellows, 6 and 9 pounds. They are totally "pets" and unlike my previous Terriers, these two are NOT interested in hunting. . .they love being pets and are good companions, sleeping at my feet as Iwork on my art.The Pekes figure largely in my art, as do the wonderful Shih Tzus of some of my friends.
Here is the original photo, and my painting of "Lulu" the Shih Tzu.I am delighted when customers send me their favorite photos of a family pet to paint and customize into a design. Personalization is my pleasure. Email me at Magiross@aol.com if you would like a customized design!Actually having the shop and learning about the many different dog breeds has become a great hobby.I've enlarged my portfolio to include 70 different breeds, with many more to work on!Life continues to be a delightful journey.
