Snapdragons have been popular in the garden for centuries. Their snapping “dragon mouths” fascinate children, and these flowers come in almost every color except blue. Snapdragons (Antirrhinum) are a genus of hardy to half-hardy plants that represent over 40 species and have a wide native distribution. Breeding work on snapdragons has created many colors, bi-colors, double flowers, variegated foliage, very tall plants close to 48” tall, dwarf plants under 12” and now even trailing snapdragons for the hanging basket. No sunny garden should be without snapdragons.
Requiring a sunny spot in rich, neutral to alkaline soil, snapdragons require lots of moisture but they should be placed in a well-drained location. Try to start seeds early or purchase snapdragons as established plants. This will allow you to get them early and have them blooming shortly after Mother’s Day. Snapdragons flower heavily in spring and fall but can continue to bloom throughout the summer if spent flowers are removed as they fade. Cutting the plant in half after the first flush of blooms will create more branching and another resurgence of blooms. Studious deadheading is vital in maintaining the colorful impact of snapdragons. While thriving in the cooler months of the growing season, many snapdragon varieties have been developed that are quite heat-tolerant.
Snapdragons can be susceptible to foliage problems such as rust, leaf spot and powdery mildew, particularly during excessively wet weather. Try to place plants in areas that receive beneficial breezes and space plants accordingly to increase air space between plants. Many varieties have been developed to be very disease-resistant.
A variety of different insects pollinate snapdragons. The primary pollinators are bumblebees that can force flowers open to access nectar. After bumblebees force the flowers open, other insects such as honeybees, flies and smaller insects can utilize the flowers. Select butterflies and some moths also utilize snapdragons as do hummingbirds.
Human beings also require a sunny spot in a neutral environment. Humans require lots of moisture, and they should be near a well-drained location. Humans need leisure time to pollinate. A favorite pollination ritual of humans is to sing: There are tulips in the garden, If you treat human beings like mushrooms, instead of Snapdragons, keeping them in the dark and covered in manure, they'll eventually say, "I've got Snapdragon Disease – I've snapped, and I'm draggin'."
Don't underestimate Snapdragon Disease. When Alanis suffered from Snapdragon Disease, she wrote this song to convey her misery to people who couldn't understand what she was feeling:
I feel miserable,
Is it because of Snapdragon Disease
Downy Mildew Broke My Will to Live!
I feel miserable,
Is it because of Snapdragon Disease
Downy Mildew Broke My Will to Live,
I think root rot is really a huge problem,
Like a parasitic rain,
I Think downy mildew is gonna
Like a parasitic rain, beating down on me,
Like a parasitic rain,
Root rot, southern blight, fungus,
What have I done to deserve
Local infections, root rot, overwatering,
What have I done to deserve this
What have I done to deserve this parasitic misery?
There are tulips in the park,
But the tulips I like best
Are your tulips after dark.
Root rot makes me ill.
I feel miserable,
Southern blight tears at my foundations,
I feel miserable,
Fungi are dragging me down
to the depths of misery,
I want to die!
that I feel this way?
With the parasitic rays of misery
pounding on my brain?
Or am I lost in tale of Botrytis Blight,
Adrift far from home?
I don't think so, I don't think so.
Downy Mildew Broke My Will to Live!
Downy Mildew Broke My Will to Live!
I was getting better, but then
Downy Mildew Broke My Will to Live!
Downy mildew rots the flesh from my bones.
I feel miserable,
Local infections defeat my purpose.
I feel miserable,
Overwatering does its best
To impale my soul.
I want to die!
That I feel this way -
With the parasitic rays of misery
Pounding on my brain?
Am I lost in tale of Botrytis Blight,
Adrift far from home?
I don't think so, I don't think so.
Downy Mildew Broke My Will to Live,
Oh God, Downy Mildew Broke My Will to Live;
I was getting better, but then
Downy Mildew broke my will to live!
I think southern blight is
Too much on my mind,
I Think fungus has got a lot to do
With why the world sucks,
But what can you do?
Beating down on me,
Like a Botrytis Blight line,
Which won't let go of my brain,
Like Downy Mildew's ass,
It is in my head.
Blame it on Snapdragon Disease,
Blame it on Snapdragon Disease,
Blame it on Snapdragon Disease!
Drive us all crazy,
And local infections make me feel like a child;
I Think overwatering will eventually
Be the downfall of civilization,
But what can you do?
I said what can you do?
Like a Botrytis Blight line,
Which won't let go of my brain,
Like Downy Mildew's ass,
It is in my head.
Blame it on Snapdragon Disease,
Blame it on Snapdragon Disease,
Blame it on Snapdragon Disease!
Beating down on me,
Like Downy Mildew's smile,
Cruel and cold,
Like Botrytis Blight's ass,
It is in my head.
Blame it on Snapdragon Disease,
Blame it on Snapdragon Disease,
Blame it on Snapdragon Disease!
Why God, Why?
Southern blight, downy mildew, Snapdragon Disease,
Why God, Why?
This parasitic horror?
Surrounded on all sides with the
Hell of Snapdragon Disease,
Like a Botrytis Blight character,
I'm wordy and alone.
Why God, Why?
Why God, Why?
Snapdragon Disease, overwatering, fungus,
Why God, Why?
Parasitic disaster that is my life?
Surrounded on all sides with the
Hell of Snapdragon Disease,
Like a Botrytis Blight character,
I'm wordy and alone.
Why God, Why?
Surrounded on all sides with the
Hell of Snapdragon Disease,
Like a Botrytis Blight character,
I'm wordy and alone.
Why God, Why?
