The aircraft carrier continues to be the centerpiece of the forces necessary for forward presence. Carriers support and operate aircraft that engage in attacks on airborne, afloat, and ashore targets that threaten free use of the sea; and they engage in sustained operations in support of other forces.

Aircraft carriers are deployed worldwide in support of U.S. interests and commitments. They can respond to global crises in ways ranging from peacetime presence to full-scale war. Together with their on-board air wings, the carriers have vital roles across the full spectrum of conflict.

USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) is a key element of our American forward-deployed defense strategy. Tasked with maintaining open sea lanes of trade and communications, TR is capable of projecting air superiority to all points of the globe. The embarked Carrier Air Wing One aircraft serve as outstanding instruments of peace. Anytime and anywhere TR reports for duty, she brings 4.5 acres of sovereign U.S. territory and 97,000 tons of diplomacy.

TR is a NIMITZ-class carrier. NIMITZ-class carriers are the largest warships in the world.

USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) is the fourth NIMITZ-class carrier. Her history began on September 30, 1980, when a contract was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding. Construction began October, 1981, Captain Paul W. Parcells was named Prospective Commanding Officer in February, 1984, and that October, the ship was officially christened. On October 25, 1986, TR was placed in active service.

USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT and Carrier Air Wing Eight deployed for Operation Desert Shield, flying over 4200 sorties and dropping over 4,800,000 pounds of ordnance.When Iraqi forces turned on the Kurds, TR and CVW-8 were among the first coalition forces in Operation Provide Comfort, flying patrols over northern Iraq.

At one time the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT and other carriers had Marine Detachments from the Marine Corps Security Force Battalion; however, effective January, 1998, non-deployed Marine Detachments were disestablished, and deployed detachments were disestablished upon return to homeport.

The structure of the disestablished Marine Detachments was used to create a second Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team Company in Yorktown, Virginia, to augment the first Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team Company in Norfolk, Virginia.

The tasks of Carrier Air Wing 8 (CVW-8) are to conduct offensive air operations against both land and sea targets, to provide for Carrier Battle Group (CVBG) defense, and to sustain air operations in support of other forces as directed. CVW-8 employs a mix of sophisticated aircraft capable of air warfare, strike warfare, antisubmarine warfare and electronic warfare.

The air wing normally consists of ten squadrons. Fighter Squadrons 14 and 41 (VF-14/VF-41) provide the most lethal air-to-air capability with the F-14A Tomcat. The strike/fighter role is fulfilled by Strike Fighter Squadrons 15 and 87 (VFA-15/VFA-87) flying the F/A-18C Hornet. Airborne early warning and airborne command and control is the responsibility of Carrier Early Warning Squadron 124 (VAW-124) and the multi-mission E-2C Hawkeye. The complex, dynamic realm of antisubmarine warfare is the domain of Sea Control Squadron 24 (VS-24), flying the S-3B Viking and of Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 3 (HS-3) flying the SH-60F/HH-60H Seahawk helicopter. Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 141 (VAQ-141) flies the EA-6B Prowler, an aircraft specifically designed to enhance Navy capabilities and survivability in the electronic combat environment of today.

CVW-8 first operated June 1943 at NAS Norfolk and was assigned to USS INTREPID (CV-11). Since then CVW-8 has been in and out of commission twice, first in 1945 following World War II and then again in 1949.

Recommissioned in April 1951, CVW-8 has been operational since that date. Since World War II, CVW-8 has been assigned to the Atlantic Fleet making numerous deployments with both the Second and Sixth Fleets, as well as three deployments with First and Seventh Fleets. The air wing has been embarked in USS INTREPID, USS BUNKER HILL, USS CORAL SEA, USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN, USS FORRESTAL, USS SHANGRI-LA, USS AMERICA, USS CARL VINSON, USS NIMITZ, USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN, USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT, USS JOHN F. KENNEDY, and USS ENTERPRISE.

Commander, Carrier Group Eight is also commander of the Theodore Roosevelt Battle Group (TRBATGRU). The duties of the Commander, Carrier group Eight include exercising command over assigned forces, and administering, training, inspecting, evaluating, and reporting on assigned ships and their embarked air wings in order to maintain these units at the highest attainable level of operational readiness. The staff developes and improves doctrine, tactics, and operating procedures for the combat employment of forces under his administrative and operational command. The Commander serves as the principal advisor to type commanders in all matters concerning the operational support and employment of assigned forces, and advises the Commander, Second Fleet regarding tactical employment of battle groups, strike warfare planning, integrated air support development, electronic warfare and anti-ship missile defense doctrine.
