1st Battalion, 5th Marines, was activated in May 1917 at Quantico, Virginia as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment. It deployed during June 1917 to France.
During its history the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, has fought in in World War I, participated in the Occupation of the German Rhineland, deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and deployed to Nicaragua in 1927.
In World War II, the Battalion was at Wellington, New Zealand, Guadalcanal, New Guinea, New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa. The unit deployed October 1945 to Tangku, China, and redeployed during May 1947 to Guam.
The Battalion deployed August 1950 to Korea, and participated in the Korean War from Pusan Perimeter, Inchon-Seoul, Chosin Reservoir, East Central Front, and Western Front. It participated in the defense of the Korean Demilitarized Zone from July 1953 to February 1955.
It Participated in the War in Vietnam March 1966 to April 1971 from Rung Sat, Chu Sai, Que Son, Hieu Nhon, Phu Loc, Phu Bai, An Hoa, and Da Nang.
The unit participated in the Battalion rotation between the 3rd Marine Division on Okinawa and 1st Marine Division stationed in the United States during the 1980s, and participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Southwest Asia, August 1990 to March 1991.
