The 519th Military Police Battalion is one of the most deployed units in the Army. The 519th Military Police Battalion returned from Afghanistan, in July 2002, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom where they provided combat support, force protection, detainee operations, and command and control as the senior MP headquarters in theater. This unit, known as the Vipers, has deployed every company, in its inventory, since September 11, 2001, to support the global War on Terrorism. In Iraq, they are augmented by Army Reservists and National Guardsmen.
Military Police are trained to use a combination of six different weapons: M16 rifle, 9mm pistol, MK19 automatic grenade launcher, M203 grenade or smoke launcher, shotgun, and an automatic machine gun.
