Aristotle divided the living world between animals and plants, and this propagated hierarchical thoughts which today reached an argument that animals are unable to enter into a social contract or make moral choices, and therefore cannot be regarded as possessors of rights. Animal law courses are now taught in 97 out of 180 law schools in the United States, and animal rights is routinely taught in universities as part of applied ethics or philosophy courses.
