The Infinite Mind/LCMedia Online Store : CDs/Transcripts of award-winning public radio show : Through the Looking Glass Part 2
We continue our look into Second Life: a place where romance thrives, and so does commerce. A place for healing of physical and psychological wounds. Plus, the principles of "simplicity" in design both in the real world and in Second Life.
The amount of real money exchanged for resources in Second Life already rivals the gross domestic product of several small countries. So we begin part two with Neil & Kasey Nafus...better known as Nephiliane and Neil Protagonist while in-world...who both earn their living - over six figures - off the virtual economy of Second Life.
That love can occur in cyberspace surprises no one these days, but can it survive the transition into real life? So far, Lin Giles & Frank Summers are proving it can! They're the hosts of the Second Life "Radio, Radio" broadcast network and of the popular, "Howard Stern"-esque dance party show Trinala...and they've been living with each other since 2004. Despite an 11-year age difference and a host of both real AND virtual issues, they've found a way to make it work.
"It's more than just a game, it's a platform" as Second Life creator Philip Rosedale told us in part one of our series. One way that really shows is in the medically beneficial aspect of Second Life. John Lester, better known as Pathfinder Linden, is the community manager responsible for academic, therapeutic and scientific used for Second Life. He came to Second Life's parent company Linden Lab from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and he's created several virtual therapeutic environments. Joining him is The Sojourner who runs a virtual support group for people who have survived strokes.
Torley Wong tells us how a rare medical condition sidelined his rising career in "techno-pop" music...and how Second Life helped him find an entirely new life; he's now a community manager in-world.
Finally, we air part of our live Second Life broadcast with MIT design expert John Maeda; champion of the concept of "simplicity" in design.
