On September 10th 2004, Jackson was diagnosed with Krabbe Leukodystrophy or Krabbe's Disease. This is a rare, genetic disease that affects the myelin coating of the nervous system. Untreated, children with Krabbe Leukodystrophy progressively lose their motor skills, then their cognitive skills. They eventually enter a vegetative state and die within a few years after diagnosis. Stem cell transplant has shown some promise in halting the progression of the disease. Jackson is currently at Duke University Medical Center, the top pediatric stem cell transplant center in the world, undergoing this life-saving procedure using donated umbilical cord blood from a healthy baby.
