Did you know that Dale Carnegie, the famous leader of entrepreneurs, self-made entrepreneur, leader, and author of How to Win Friends and Influence People a very strong sense of what people's names meant to them. In his writing he offered many practical suggestions based on principles he believed led to success in working with people. The importance of learning and using names is one of the first principles that Carnegie addressed in his famous book. He explained that:
“We should be aware of the magic contained in a name and realize that this single item is wholly and completely owned by the person with whom we are dealing . . . and nobody else. The name sets the individual apart; it makes him or her unique among all others. The information we are imparting or the quest we are making takes on a special importance when we approach the situation with the name of the individual. From the waitress to the senior executive, the name will work magic as we deal with others.” (Carnegie, 1981, p. 83)
