Hume’s Fork was formed in 1996 by Krispen Hartung, but was originally called “Rift,” inspired by the improvisational prowess of the band Phish. Rift was a four piece (eventually five piece) jazz/rock band that spliced long and spontaneously composed space jams inside pop songs with vocals, much in the same way that Phish and the Grateful Deal integrated space jams into their live performances. Hume’s Fork is the instrumental and avant-garde space child of Rift. Rift disbanded, but Hume’s Fork became its surviving improvisational spirit, remaining strictly as a studio project. “Assaults & Reprieves,” the bands only live CD, is essentially the best of all the improvisational space jams recorded at Rift’s live performances between April 5, 1996 and August 9, 1997.
