Holidays At The Limit : Global Holidays : Halloween
The word Halloween has its origins in a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints called All Hallows Day, celebrated on November 1st.
The story says that, on that precise day, the spirits of the people who had died a year before would come back in search of new living bodies to possess them for the next year, as their only hope for the afterlife. But the alive didn't wanted to be possesed and so, on october 31 they made their homes cold and undesirable, trying to be as destructive as possible to frighten away the spirits.
In 1840, Halloween was brought from Celts to America.
