The Falcon's Press Gang is the re-enacted crew of the HMS Falcon. This collection of chanteys displays a broad sample of the songs sung by British seamen in the 18th and 19th centuries.
It took quite a while for this project to become what you're holding now: we're not professionals, not singers anyway. We are the re-enacted crew and press gang of the HMS Falcon, a 14-gun British Sloop-of War that roamed the coast of North America from Boston to Antigua from 1775 to 1779. Capt. John Linzee, her master and commander, was notoriously efficient at pressing men into the British Royal Navy. In the 18th century, pressing was the forceful, sometimes violent recruitment of able-bodied seamen into the Navy. A press gang was a group of men charged to do this unpopular and dangerous work. We came together out of a common interest of nautical history and the history of the American Revolution. We croaked out a few tunes, and much to our surprise, people stopped and listened, and even applauded! In time, a lot of people were stopping and before long we found ourselves faced with requests for recordings, performances, and shows. After we collectively scratched our heads in wonder, we decided to make a go of it. Our first performances began as living history displays in the Castillo San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, Florida (a British port-of-call for the HMS Falcon in 1777) and other historic sites. The reception was so warm, we relented and created the CD that you now hold. We certainly hope that you enjoy listening to it as much as we have enjoyed creating it.
