The Golden Age of Illustration

The "golden age of illustration" began in the 1880s and lasted until shortly after World War I. Improvements in printing technology freed illustrators to experiment with color and new rendering techniques, and a small group of illustrators from this time left behind an enduring legacy of mythical and fantastic artwork. Mermaids, fairies, and dreamlike landscapes were the hallmarks of these artists that included such luminaries as Maxfield Parrish, Kay Nielsen, Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham.
