Here below we have products displaying "The Tabula Smaragdina"; which reads around the peremiter, "Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invennies Occultum Lapidem". This symbol is very complex in it's meaning, and can be broken down into many esoteric and alchemical meanings. On the surface level "VITROIL" (derived from the 1st letter in each word) is the name that alchemists gave to sulfuric acid and also used for various sulfate salts. Vitriol was the most important alchemical substance, intended to be used as a philosopher's stone. The word vitriol derives from the Latin vitreus, 'glass', for the glassy appearance of the salts. The alchemical motto translates to 'Visit the interior of the earth and rectifying (i.e. purifying) you will find the hidden/secret stone'. Another possible translation of the sentence is: "See in the interior of the purified earth, and you will find the secret stone, the true medicine". Vitriol was a code name for the original substance of the philosopher's stone. It should also be understood that the common types of vitriol are not the true Vitriol of the Philosophers. This becomes clearer still, if one takes seriously the warnings of alchemists, who wrote, "You must take in our work the vitriol of the philosophers, and not the common". It is also a symbol for the whole process of the operis magni. The Tabula Smaragdina can be found stamped among others in: "Secret figures of the Rosicrucians of the 16th and 17th Century", Altona 1785. Highly complex, it is a paradem worthy of study. Each may strike it lucky who seriously searches for the true vitriol of the philosophers!
