Grace, flexibility, strength and athleticism, Rhythmic Gymnastics is a sport and an art. Rhythmic Gymnasts manipulate a Rope, Hoop, Ball, Clubs or Ribbon while balancing, leaping, turning, and dancing to music.
Historically dance was one of the few acceptable forms of exercise open to women. In 1837, Catherine E. Beecher founded the Western Female Institute in Ohio. The program taught young women to exercise to music, using simple calisthenics. Exercising to music has evolved in many ways.
Rhythmic Gymnastics was recognized as a sport in the 1940s. It was introduced at the Olympics in 1984 in Los Angeles.
