A Truly American style of dance, Tap Dance has its roots in the rhythms of Africa. Africans in early America danced rhythms using brushing and shuffling movements of the feet. This Shuffle Dance style was copied by performers in blackface minstrel shows beginning around 1828.
Buck-and-Wing was a fast style of dance in hard soled shoes similiar to English clog dancing. The Soft Shoe was a smooth syncopated style danced in leather soled shoes. By the 1920s metal plates, or taps, were added to the shoes.
Bill "Bojangles" Robinson became America's most famous tap dancer adding jazz influences. Over the years, ballet, modern and hip hop dance have influenced tap dance style, But the true heart of tap will always be the pecussion and rhythm patterns of the feet.
