Crater Lake is arguably one of the most beautiful places on earth, with a volcanic caldera more than 5 miles wide and 20 miles of cliffs and rock formations around the rim. Phantom Ship is the remnant of a volcano that existed before Mt. Mazama was formed. The deep sapphire blue water is fed only by precipitation and snow melt.
There are several places along the East Rim where the Phantom Ship formation can be seen. This picture was taken from the Sun Notch, the closest view from the rim. On the horizon, a little left of center, you can see Mt. Tielsen roughtly 17 miles away.
