"The age of chivalry is never past, so long as there is a wrong left unredressed on earth, or a man or woman left to say, I will redress that wrong, or spend my life in the attempt." -- Charles S. Kingsley, Life (vol. II, ch. XXVIII)
There was no such thing as a uniform code of chivalry in the Middle Ages. Many lists of "knightly virtues" where compiled by prominent knights, monarchs, and philosophers to codify what they felt defined chivalry, but no two of these lists was exactly the same.
In examining these lists there are common themes in the knightly virtues. I have choosen what I consider to be the nine defining knightly virtues of chivalry. They are: Courage, Mercy, Justice, Largesse, Faith, Nobility, Hope, Franchise and Honor.
Nine simple words. When they are acted on together, they define chivalry. They make a Knight - not necessarilly of sword & shield, but of Heart, Soul and Spirit. Here's to all the true Knights in the world, wherever they may be.
