As befits any man in ancient Pompeii blessed with three names, he most certainly was a Roman citizen and entitled to wear a toga. His own records indicate that he made quite a nice living for himself as a banker and auctioneer. The furnishings of his house also provide us with firsthand information about a city that still fascinates the world today. The modern world did not have a chance to make the acquaintance of Caecilius until archaeologists excavated his house in 1875. Although Pompeii was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D., it was also preserved at the same time.
