BrightStar German Shepherd Rescue

BrightStar is a non-profit organization based in Rochester NY dedicated to saving German Shepherd Dogs. We officially opened our doors September 5, 2002. The organization was founded by Ruth Urban and other rescue volunteers.

When we take German Shepherd Dogs into the rescue, we make a commitment that each dog will be happy and healthy for the rest of its long life. Before adoption, our dogs live in foster homes as part oif the family -- being socialized, trained, loved and spoiled until adoption. Our dogs receive the best of veterinary care, including spaying and neutering. When placing our dogs, we have a lengthy screening process to assure the quality and commitment of each home.

Our dogs come from many different places including animal shelters, animal cruelty investigators and individuals, who for one reason or another, cannot keep their dogs. We are a preferred placement partner with most upstate shelters.

All dogs accepted are purebred or nearly purebred German Shepherd Dogs. All dogs are temperament tested by expert canine behaviorists on the BrightStar team before they are accepted into the program. We will not knowingly accept or place dogs that we deem aggressive. We do not place dogs for the sole purpose of guarding, fighting or breeding.

BrightStar has also helped keep many families and their dogs together. We provide behavior consultation, training referrals, and information about housing alternatives. We educate people about this awesome breed.
