The Bob McCarty Shop : Shop 'n' Slave
How far will big companies go to cut costs? Big companies are using every available means to cut costs – even if it means taking the human element out of doing business. A good example of this takes place at a local grocery store I like to call, “Shop ‘n’ Slave.” Located just a few blocks from my home, Shop ‘n’ Slave™ gladly takes my money, but they make me do the hard part – that is, bagging the groceries and carrying them to my car. They say this lowers their cost of doing business and, as a result, enables them to pass along lower prices to people like me. If that was true, they would charge me less for using the self-checkout lane – but they don’t. Oh, how I long for the return to the days when pimple-faced teenage boys mumbled three beautiful words in my direction: “Paper or plastic?” Imagine what it would happen if other industries adopted the Shop ‘n’ Slave™ approach. At the dentist office, you would pay in advance for the privilege of cleaning your own teeth and drilling and filling your own cavities. At the auto repair shop, you would basically be renting equipment you probably don’t know how to use to diagnose and repair your car’s engine problem. Worst of all, if the pre-need funeral business adopted the Shop ‘n’ Slave™ strategy, you would pick out your casket, choose your burial plot and pay for everything in advance — and then they would make you dig your own hole! Oh, how I long for “Paper or plastic?”
