In the late 1800s political cartoonists began to use the character of Uncle Sam as a popular symbol of the United States government. The single most famous portrait of Uncle Sam is the "I WANT YOU" Army recruiting poster from World War I, painted by James Montgomery Flagg in 1916-1917.
Over the centuries we've learnt what it really means for the power-elite of this world, such as George Bush, who is himself a deserter, to tell ordinary people they are wanted for war. What they really want is for you to bend over so they can do what they do best.
