But E. wanted to do "real" movies', without all of the kitschy singin' to animals and cars, where he got to play a character that was more than just him in a cheesy costume, set at the racetrack, or Hawaii. Like most of Presleys movies, the Black Sun revolves around music, mostly old blues and country songs, gospel, traditionals, and the like, but the main character, Leroy Morte, doesn't sing.The Black Sun is many different things. It's a film noir inspired serial killer story. It's a story based on ancient myths of the Hero Twins, culture generators from myths in stories from around the world. It's a story using the modern myths of the American South, embodied in the traditional music and folklore of this legendary area. Leroy Morte isn't Elvis, although some of his personality, looks, and interests are drawn from the MYTH that is Elvis. He likes guns. He likes fast cars. He likes fast women, has a southern' drawl, and a penchant for the dramatic. And he's hunting for his long lost twin. The Black Sun explores what it could've been like to see E. as a dangerously unstable man, as a "cold-blooded killer". There's no breaking into song, there's no goofy sidekick, or cute kids. There's a lonely man, desperately seeking answers to his past.
Characters-
Leroy Morte- A restless man, driving across the American South at night in a black 1969 Cutlass. Plagued by hallucinations and memories that seem impossible, Leroy feels himself slowly going insane. He gives various pseudonyms, and rarely uses his real name.
Lucretia-Although not specifically named as of chapter 3, the black 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible is known as Lucretia. She has a 455 cubic inch engine.
The Twin- A man Leroy sees in his visions, who looks exactly like him. He suspects the man is his twin.
Hunahpu and Xbalanque- The Hero Twins of the Popol Vuh. In mayan myth and legend, the twins conquer death.
Osiris, Set and Isis-In Egyptian myths, Osiris is killed by his brother Set, and resurrected by his wife Isis.
Andrew Ulysses- A hitch-hiker picked up by Leroy Morte in Dead Leaves.
Marianne D'Notradam- A gas station attendant in Velvet Bones.
Simon Laroche-The shady proprieter of a New Orleans brothel, The House of the Rising Sun.
