Caverns of the Big Hominid : BigHominid's Excrescences : Water from a Skull
Description: This book is a collection of reflective essays and academic papers (1999-2006) on religious diversity, Buddhism, Christianity, mind, and other topics of personal interest.
Synopsis: Kevin Kim is a native of Alexandria, Virginia, USA, who currently lives and teaches in Seoul, South Korea. He is an ordained elder of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and holds degrees in French (BSLA, Georgetown University) as well as Religion and Culture (MA, Catholic University). Kevin's areas of interest include interreligious dialogue, philosophy of religion, philosophy of mind, Buddhist studies, and comparative religion. Despite his love of religious studies, his sense of humor remains dangerously irreverent and he is an inveterate scientific skeptic, neither trait of which endears him to more literal-minded believers, who suspect he is not a real Christian. While a happy resident of Seoul, Kevin remains a simple Virginian at heart. ..........The title "WATER FROM A SKULL" is taken from a famous story in Korean Buddhism, the story of the monk Wonhyo, who was traveling to China with his companion, the monk Uisang. Wonhyo had an epiphany after drinking water out of what he had thought was a stone bowl one night. In the morning, he saw that the "bowl" was in fact a skull. After vomiting in disgust, he realized that it is the mind that makes good and bad, pure and impure. Further realizing that all the wisdom he needed was already inside his own skull, Wonhyo turned around and went back to Korea. ..........WATER FROM A SKULL contains five principal sections: (1) "Interface," which deals with issues in religious diversity, especially the question of religious pluralism; (2) "Christianity," which contains meditative, philosophical, and critical essays related to the world's largest religion; (3) "Buddhism," which contains essays (and two academic papers) about the tradition of Gautama and Vasubandhu; (4) "Mind," which is a short chapter dealing with the philosophy of mind; and (5) "Insights," which is an omnibus section containing a grab-bag of essays not easily categorized. Enjoy!
