The idea for Bartlett Publishing came from looking at so many Christian books and CDs which had licenses on them saying, basically, "if you copy this from anyone, we will send the Feds after you." Or, as I like to say, "please don't use this to edify ANYONE else. You must pay us to edify others." This attitude seemed decidedly un-Christian. The idea that Church members could not copy helpful information or worshipful songs to share with their friends was an offense. Therefore, Bartlett Publishing came about to provide materials that were provide under licenses that allowed sharing. It seems that sharing is a much more Biblical attitude than greed.
So why do we publish technical books? The founder of Bartlett Publishing, Jonathan Bartlett, is a programmer/analyst by trade. So it seemed that his talents would also be well-used to publish technical works as well. The technical field has lots of gaps that need to be filled, as is evident from the massive amount of problems the software industry has (i.e. - how often do you have to reboot your computer?). In addition, we thought that serving two markets would make it easier to pay the bills while we try to make full market penetration.
